Knowe of Skea, Berstness, Westray - 2002 |
|
| : Set on a tidal islet on the extreme south-west of Westray the Knowe of Skea is the most prominent of many mounds on the peninsular. The other mounds have been identified as funerary monuments. | ![]() |
| The team headed by EASE returns this summer to the Knowe of Skea to investigate the Pictish building which is superimposed upon a larger, complicated and as yet not understood, site of an earlier period. In addition to this, human burials were found on the mound, which may have been a focus for burial over some time. This excavation is being undertaken as a response to the threat to the site from the sea. | |
