| The work initiated and led by Dr James Barrett from
York University has extended from the immediate vicinity of the site
into a project over a much wider area, investigating soils and settlement
throughout this period. This is the first such investigation into the
archaeology of the period in Orkney (previous excavations have been
focused on high-status sites or those with ecclesiastical connections).
