After Nick's visit on Friday to help us understand the unusual architecture of the main building at Stonehall we are still confused ! Now careful excavation of different parts of the interior will slowly show us how it was built and why the upright at the rear of the cell is externally supported by two uprights. In an attempt to locate actual houses which are contemporary with the building we opened a small trench (F) to the south. Here a further area of ashy midden was found but still no houses. After removing about 15-20cm a great find was made. Our first polished stone axe this season was found in near perfect condition. There are still many things we need to find out, not least where are the many houses which are producing the huge amounts of ash and midden that surround the main building. |
