The Dwarfie Stone |
On the island of Hoy,
along the glen that leads to Rackwick Bay, is a mysterious tomb 5000 years
old. The Dwarfie Stane was hollowed out of a block of red sandstone, with
a passage and two compartments, and a large stone that blocked the entrance.
No-one can say who its inhabitants were. Sir Walter Scott, in The Pirate,
described 'this extraordinary dwelling which Trolld, a dwarf famous in the
northern sagas, is said to have framed for his favourite residence'. Speculation
has been rife over the centuries about the makers of this strange tomb and
its status of chambered cairn has been challenged many times.
