Quoygrew, Westray - 2002

Norse middens and buildings. The extensive middens relating to this site contain evidence for the economic basis of a vernacular settlement from Viking to Post-Medieval times.
The work initiated and led by Dr James Barrett from York University has extended from the immediate vicinity of the site into a project over a much wider area, investigating soils and settlement throughout this period. This is the first such investigation into the archaeology of the period in Orkney (previous excavations have been focused on high-status sites or those with ecclesiastical connections).
